Fairy Tale Spotlight: Nahum [Book Review]

"Nahum" is the thirty-forth book of the "Holy Bible," and it was written by Nahum himself. It is kind of the sequel to "Jonah," just far less entertaining. Let me explain.

Nahum was sent to prophesy against Nineveh 150 years after the Jonah incident. As would be entirely expected, Nineveh went right back to their stupid, and Nahum showed up to warn them what would happen if they didn't change their ways.

From what I understand, they did not actually change their ways and were swept up under the dominion of Babylon like so many other places filled with stupid people. This is really the whole theme of the Old Testament right here. People going back and forth and never really getting anywhere.

All this does weigh on me a lot. I see this back and forth motion happening even in modern times. People never learn or they forget or just don't care about the lessons of the past. Although Nineveh's sudden change at the advent of Jonah was spectacular, their ultimate failure is a real disappointment and one we see all over the place across all cultures of humanity.

150 years is not that long. It really isn't. It's just a blink of an eye. And if you consider it, that's only about 3 or 4 generations of people. It shows how fast people stop caring. It's a real shame that the human race, as a whole, is so fickle.

The book itself, without the historical context, can be a bit confusing. I only recommend "Nahum" if you go into it knowing it is a sequel to "Jonah." Side-research may be required. It was for me, anyways. Also it's only about an 8-minute read. Enjoy.

  1. Societies do self-destructive things for the very same reason individuals smoke: EVIL. The common wickedness is sheer apathy and the irresponsibility that results. Dire consequences do little to dissuade individuals or their societies. When their nastiness becomes too great, God cleans up the mess. As for the victims of the cleaning: Anyone so pathetic that the world is better off without them DESERVES to be destroyed.

  2. Indeed time is short, 150 years is a blink of the eye. Generations continue making the same mistakes of their forefathers. We got to break the cycle and use our limited time to escape from its trappings, The Way is The Truth.

    1. I think, people as a group, tend to listen to each other a bit too much. They say what they each want to hear and forget about what actual truth is.
